Before social media profiles and instant-messaging handles became dominant, the email address already taught society how to attach communication to an online self.
Email also changed labor. Work no longer needed to travel only by paper, fax, phone, or in-person coordination. Documents, instructions, revisions, and contact could begin to circulate in a partially asynchronous digital flow. This did not eliminate meetings or calls, but it changed the organization of attention. Work could now wait in the inbox. So could opportunity.
Seen from later years of instant messaging and real-time platforms, email can look slow and formal. But historically, its importance lies precisely in that intermediate position. It made digital communication durable without making it fully synchronous. It allowed communication to leave the moment and become retrievable, sortable, archivable, and transferable.
