Chapter 6 (1985): Interfaces, Visibility, and Ordinary Proximity to Computing /
English
The change of 1985 feels like proximity.
Only when computing becomes visible—in schools, in workplaces, in media narratives—can it enter ordinary imagination.
1) Global slice: interface and experience begin to govern adoption
When tools become learnable and visible, diffusion accelerates. Interface is not decoration; it decides who gets in.
2) China slice: from the lab to public narrative
Computing remains tied to computer rooms and labs, but it begins to show up in public language: as a sign of modernization, and as a new expectation of skill.
3) Mechanism: visibility creates demand
Demand is often not discovered; it is produced. People see a capability, then begin to want it. Visibility creates training, creates jobs, creates markets.
Key point: in 1985, computing begins to travel from internal capability toward social imagination.
