The 0.5 Chronicles
Volume Roadmap /
A structural guide to how The 0.5 Chronicles is organized across volumes, periods, and historical transitions. /
English
The 0.5 Chronicles is not a loose archive of essays. It is being built as a volume-based history of how ordinary life crossed from the late mechanical age into the AI era.
The project moves along two lines at once:
- Retrospective volumes that rebuild the transition years from roughly 1980 onward.
- Now Records that preserve the present tense as source material from inside the transition itself.
This roadmap explains how the main historical line is currently structured.
Volume I — Digital Eve (1980–1995)
Volume I records the years before digital civilization became normal life.
It follows the late mechanical age, early computing habits, toolchains, office systems, training, reliability, and the gradual arrival of networked thinking. By the end of this volume, the internet has entered the center of the age, but it has not yet fully reorganized daily life.
In one sentence:
Volume I is about the formation of digital civilization before it became ordinary life.
Volume II — The Age of Connection (1996–2010)
Volume II records the years when the internet entered ordinary life.
This is the period of dial-up, inboxes, search, cybercafes, commercial webpages, digital memory, instant messaging, forums, broadband, feeds, folk classification, touchscreens, apps, cloud habits, and the visible stream of everyday life.
In one sentence:
Volume II is about the internet becoming ordinary life, then entering the pocket, the cloud, and the stream.
Volume III — The Platform Age (2011–2020)
Volume III records the years when platforms began to organize ordinary life from within.
This is the period of mobile payment, messaging ecosystems, behavioral data, recommendation systems, deep learning’s public breakthrough, API composition, voice interfaces, hidden automation, machine perception, and remote coordination at scale.
In one sentence:
Volume III is about platforms, mobile systems, data, and algorithms becoming the everyday machinery of social continuity.
Volume IV — Machine Collaborators (2021–2025)
Volume IV has now been launched as the next historical line after the platform era.
It follows the years in which remote-first coordination settles, generative AI enters public life, foundation models become infrastructure, agents begin entering workflows, and human-machine collaboration starts becoming a baseline professional skill.
In one sentence:
Volume IV is about machines becoming visible collaborators inside cognition, work, and coordination.
What remains open
The next unresolved question is no longer whether a fourth volume exists, but how the project should continue after 2025.
For now, the repo treats 2026 and beyond more cautiously: as a mix of unlisted chapter experiments, present-tense notes, and Now Records, rather than as a fully stabilized new volume.
Why the project is called “0.5”
The phrase “0.5” names a transitional civilization.
It describes a world that is no longer fully mechanical, but not yet fully AI-native; a world in which humans, institutions, software, and infrastructures are still crossing an unfinished threshold.
The project does not treat history as a sequence of abstract inventions alone. It asks how technological change enters houses, schools, offices, habits, markets, emotions, and expectations.
In short
At this stage, the public architecture of the project is:
- Volume I — the formation of digital civilization
- Volume II — the normalization of networked life
- Volume III — the platform organization of ordinary life
- Volume IV — machine collaborators entering ordinary work and cognition
- Now Records — notes from inside the present transition
This is the current map of the book.
